Message
The School of Design and Architecture (SDA) at Nagoya City University (NCU) is a unique school, founded in 1996 and is now in its 28th year. The SDA consists of three departments: the Department of Informatics and Media Design, the Department of Industrial Innovation Design, and the Department of Architecture and Urban Design. “Design and Architecture” is a discipline that aims to harmonize art and engineering, and the SDA offers a broad curriculum ranging from art and design to engineering. This is because society demands not only the quantity of knowledge but also the "design ability" of how to cook it. The SDA produces a diverse range of human resources activities in various fields of society.
The philosophy of the SDA is “Scientia (Science) / Techna (Technology)”, “Natura (Nature) / Humanitas (Humanity)”, and “Sensus (Sensibility) / Ars (Art)”, as inscribed on the symbol tower. Since the NCU has a Medical School, a Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a School of Nursing, the SDA has, since its establishment, been focusing on “health” and “welfare” as its keywords and has emphasized the perspective of “design” in everything from “Koto-dzukuri (Creating Things)” to “Mono-dzukuri (Manufacturing)”. Its purpose is to realize the “happiness” and “welfare” of humankind.
When choosing a university or a school/faculty, only some people have a definite future goal; many need to be more specific or worried about it. The SDA is known for its practice of small-group education and proximity between students and faculty members. I believe “there is more than one thing you want to do”. Our faculty members in the SDA will do their utmost to help you realize your vision of the future. We are waiting for all of you who want to broaden your interests and horizons and study hard with dreams, ideals and passion.
