【Event Report】Crime prevention and Disaster preparedness for international students
Self-defense workshop
Bicycle Driving Lesson
On May 14, 2025, a lecture event on ”Crime prevention and Disaster preparedness for international students" was held with the Mizuho Police Station.
17 international students from China, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, and Italy studying at Nagoya City University participated in the event.
This event, aimed at helping international students live safely and securely in Japan, has been held since 2023, and this was the third iteration. In addition to lectures on traffic safety, crime prevention, and disaster preparedness, the event featured a self-defense workshop led by police officers.
The participants listened attentively to the lectures and actively participated in hands-on activities to learn how to protect themselves from danger. In the bicycle safety lecture, participants used a rope to experience how far a bicycle travels in one second, learning how dangerous to ride a bicycle while distracted.
A Chinese student who participated in the event said, “I was surprised to learn that a bicycle travels about 6 meters in one second and to see that distance for myself. I realized that I need to be careful when riding a bicycle in the future.”
In the training session on disaster response, participants learned about the importance of daily preparedness, including actions to take during an earthquake and preparing food for emergent situation. A German international student commented, “Since Germany doesn't have as many earthquakes as Japan, I felt that the disaster preparedness checklist would be useful.”
The International Exchange Center will continue to collaborate with relevant organizations to host events that are beneficial to international students' daily lives.
